The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
