In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
